Role
The Soriano Residence is a developer-driven remodel of a 1940s “War Box” in Renton, Washington—one of many modest homes built during World War II to house factory workers supporting the U.S. war effort. Originally intended to last just 20 years, the home’s longevity stands as a quiet testament to that era’s resourcefulness and determination.
Challenge
The developer required a cost-driven design that could modernize the home for resale while complying with current City of Renton zoning standards. The existing structure violated front setback requirements, making any addition or modification a zoning challenge.
Solution
SCR designed an updated structure that respects modern codes while supporting contemporary living. The remodel preserves the home’s historic footprint and character, adapting the 80-year-old framework to meet present-day expectations for comfort, efficiency, and livability.
