Role
Ivar’s Historic Residence is a sensitive renovation of the former personal home of Ivar Haglund, founder of Seattle’s iconic Ivar’s Seafood Restaurant chain. Located on Fuhrman Ave E on Seattle's Portage Bay, the project honors the home’s cultural and architectural legacy while carefully updating it for contemporary living.
Challenge
As the historic residence of one of Seattle’s most beloved figures, the home required a thoughtful approach that balanced preservation with modernization. The challenge was to improve spatial flow and functionality while retaining the craftsmanship, charm, and character that define the home’s historical significance.
Solution
SCR reworked the interior layout to create a more open and connected living environment, allowing natural light to move freely throughout the home. Subtle architectural interventions modernize the plan while maintaining a strong sense of continuity with the original structure. A restrained, neutral color palette provides a timeless backdrop that elevates the home’s historic details rather than competing with them.
Materials + Craft
Custom cabinetry and millwork are integrated throughout the residence, reinforcing cohesion and craftsmanship. Original architectural elements—including a beautifully carved banister—were carefully preserved and celebrated as focal points. Select contemporary details introduce a fresh layer of modern living, resulting in a residence that respects its past while confidently evolving into its next chapter.
