Role
The Kuhn House is a comprehensive renovation of a bluff-top residence in West Seattle, overlooking Puget Sound and defined by expansive water views. Designed as a calm retreat for homeowners with high-intensity careers in the tech industry, the project balances contemporary clarity with timeless warmth.
Challenge
The owners sought a serene refuge that could counterbalance the pace and pressure of their professional lives while fully engaging the home’s remarkable setting. The challenge was to create interiors that felt composed and restorative, while integrating modern amenities and expanding the living spaces without disrupting the home’s existing character.
Solution
SCR reimagined the main living floor to enhance openness, flow, and connection to the surrounding landscape. The kitchen was fully overhauled to include a new butler’s pantry, a custom island with an integrated farm-style sink, and marble countertops that anchor the space with quiet refinement. A new rear bump-out introduces an adjacent living area featuring a gas fireplace, built-in window seat, and French doors that open to the backyard, extending the home’s living spaces and strengthening the relationship between indoors and out.
Materials + Craft
Custom millwork and cabinetry were a central focus throughout the project, providing cohesion and tactile warmth across the interiors. A restrained, contemporary palette and timeless detailing allow the architecture to frame the views rather than compete with them. The result is a refined, restorative home—designed to support daily life, embrace its spectacular setting, and offer a lasting sense of calm.
