Role
SCR Architects transformed a 1960s single-room cabin on a bluff’s edge in Waldport, Oregon into a modern, flexible retreat that celebrates its dramatic harbor setting.
Challenge
The original cabin was compact and constrained, limiting views and livable space. The site’s steep bluff and 270° harbor vistas required a design that expanded functionality without compromising the home’s character or connection to the landscape.
Solution
A sleek, second-story addition provides open sightlines, a roof deck, and a catwalk, while the lower level is wrapped with a deck and breezeway linking to a converted auxiliary shed serving as a kids’ bunkhouse. The design maximizes views, daylight, and adaptable family living, creating a home that supports both privacy and togetherness.
Materials + Craft
The project combines durable, site-sensitive materials with clean, modern forms. Decking, structural additions, and connections to the auxiliary shed are executed with precision, preserving the original craftsmanship while enhancing functionality, comfort, and long-term value.
