Role

Set on a steep, once-unbuildable lot in Edmonds, this 3,900-square-foot contemporary home turns extreme site constraints into opportunity, drawing inspiration from modern Australian architecture—celebrated for sculptural form, seamless indoor-outdoor flow, and a deep connection to the landscape.

Challenge

A 50-foot grade change created extraordinary structural challenges. The lot’s steep terrain required stabilization, careful engineering, and city approval, all while maintaining the vision of a sculptural, tiered home that flows with the landscape.

Solution

SCR anchored the home into the hillside with a 25-foot retaining wall supporting tiered floor plates. Through extensive analyses and coordination with third-party engineering audits, the team demonstrated the design’s safety and feasibility. Construction proceeded without temporary shoring, validating the technical approach, saving cost, and turning a complex site into a livable, enduring home.

Materials + Craft

The home’s execution celebrates precision and structural integrity, integrating tiered forms into the hillside while preserving seamless indoor-outdoor flow and the sculptural character inspired by modern Australian architecture.
