War Box

The Renton Highlands War Box is the thoughtful renovation of a modest wartime home originally constructed during World War II to house workers supporting the region’s booming defense industry. One of many small residences built as temporary workforce housing, the home was originally expected to serve for only a few decades. More than eighty years later, this project demonstrates how careful design can extend the life of a historic structure while adapting it to the needs of contemporary homeowners.

Challenge

The project was conceived as a developer-driven remodel intended to modernize the home for resale while remaining sensitive to its historical origins. Like many homes of its era, the structure presented challenges related to aging systems, outdated layouts, and limited living space. Complicating matters further, the existing building encroached into current front setback requirements, creating significant zoning constraints for any expansion or modification. The design needed to maximize value and livability while navigating regulatory limitations and preserving the home's essential character.

Solution

SCR Architects developed a strategic renovation approach that worked within the home's existing footprint and zoning restrictions while dramatically improving its functionality. The updated design reimagines the interior layout to better support modern living patterns, introducing brighter, more connected spaces while improving circulation throughout the home. Rather than erasing the building's history, the renovation embraces the efficiency and simplicity that defined the original wartime architecture, demonstrating how a modest structure can be thoughtfully adapted for a new generation of occupants.
