Role
Originally built in 1907, the Volunteer Park Residence is a comprehensive renovation that restores a historic home while reimagining it for contemporary living. The project honors the craftsmanship and character of the original structure while introducing light, openness, and modern comfort throughout.
Challenge
After more than a century, the home required a complete transformation to meet modern expectations without sacrificing its historic integrity. The challenge was to carefully strip the structure back to its studs, correct proportion and flow, and elevate the spatial experience, all while preserving the defining architectural details that anchor the home to its era.
Solution
Our team undertook a full interior reconfiguration, raising floor-to-floor heights to create open, airy spaces filled with natural light. Kitchens and bathrooms were entirely overhauled and thoughtfully integrated into the new layout, balancing modern functionality with period-appropriate scale and detailing. Throughout the home, custom millwork and cabinetry reinforce continuity between old and new.
Materials + Craft
Walnut inlaid floors bring warmth and refinement to the interiors, complemented by meticulously crafted custom woodwork throughout. On the exterior, original Craftsman elements—including corbels and arched windows—were carefully preserved and restored, ensuring the home retains its historic presence while confidently stepping into its next chapter.
