Role
Shed Modules is an exploratory design study focused on compact accessory buildings under 120 square feet—small enough to avoid permitting requirements in many jurisdictions while offering outsized flexibility and architectural potential. The concept rethinks the humble shed as a modular system capable of growing, adapting, and connecting over time.
Challenge
As cities and homeowners seek more adaptable space without the complexity of permitting, the challenge was to design a building system that is simple, repeatable, and highly versatile. The modules needed to function independently while also allowing for expansion, connection, and personalization across a range of residential contexts.
Solution
SCR developed a modular approach in which individual shed units can be deployed alone or arranged in multiples and connected through lightweight trellis structures and enclosed greenhouse links. Predesigned openings and connectors allow modules to combine seamlessly, creating flexible compounds that can evolve into studios, workspaces, garden rooms, or hybrid indoor-outdoor environments. The system encourages incremental growth rather than one-time construction.
Materials + Craft
The modules are envisioned with marine-grade plywood exteriors treated with pine tar, an ancient waterproofing technique dating back to Viking-era construction and proven through centuries of maritime use. This material strategy offers durability, weather resistance, and a rich, tactile patina that deepens over time. Paired with straightforward construction and thoughtful detailing, Shed Modules balances tradition and innovation—an adaptable, low-barrier building system designed for modern living and long-term resilience.
